COPS@Zebra

The COPS@Zebra (Collision Preventing Safety System) system is an innovative system consisting of four signs, where two signs are intended to warn drivers of approaching pedestrian crossings, and two signs to warn pedestrians of approaching vehicles.

The COPS@Zebra system consists of four signs: two signs are designed to warn drivers as they approach a pedestrian/cyclist crossing, while the other two signs warn pedestrians/cyclists of approaching vehicles. An additional long-term effect of the COPS@Zebra system is traffic calming.

The system also collects additional data for traffic statistics purposes, namely:

traffic density (number of vehicles per hour)
vehicle speeds (maximum, average, 85th percentile average, number of speeding violations)
reduction in vehicle speeds after the warning signals are activated (showing a direct effect on traffic calming)
and other traffic and system data for monitoring proper operation.
