COPS@zebra

The COPS@zebra (Collision Preventing Safety System) system is an innovative system consisting of four signs, where two signs are intended to warn drivers of approaching pedestrian crossings, and two signs to warn pedestrians of approaching vehicles.

An additional long-term effect of the COPS@zebra system is traffic calming, as the fact that pedestrians and other passing road users see the current speed of road traffic or individual vehicles further motivates the responsible driver to adjust the speed.

The PHP module is a speed display that is oriented to be visible to a pedestrian who is about to cross a crosswalk. The data on the vehicle speed of the PHP display is received from the TFL modules via a radio connection. In case of vehicles approaching from both directions, the PHP displays show the speed of the faster vehicle.

The speed display also has an effect on traffic calming, as the fact that pedestrians and other passing road users can see the current speed of road traffic or individual vehicles further motivates the responsible driver to adjust the speed.

The basic structure and an example of the layout of the units of the COPS@zebra system are shown in the figure below

An additional long-term effect of the COPS@zebra system is traffic calming, as the fact that pedestrians and other passing road users see the current speed of road traffic or individual vehicles further motivates the responsible driver to adjust the speed.

Like all COPS systems, COPS@zebra performs additional data collection tasks for traffic statistics, namely the following:

  • traffic density (number of vehicles per hour)
  • vehicle speeds (maximum, average, average 85%, number of speeding violations)
  • reduction of vehicle speed after turning on warning signals (visible direct effect on traffic calming)
  • other traffic and system data to monitor the correctness of operations.

The efficiency, importance, and positive results and effects of the COPS@zebra system installation are presented also in the TV show "Avtomobilnost / Automotive" (from 19.3.2020) - click here.
